Internship 2022: Festivals in Spain

Have you decided to do your internship in Spain? In addition to having made the right choice, you will live an unforgettable experience thanks to the many festivals that exist in Spain.

Spain’s National Day and Columbus Day :

Columbus Day commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs after the signing of the capitulation of Santa Fe. It is celebrated on 12 October. A military parade is organised in Madrid in the presence of the king, the royal family, the government, representatives of the highest state institutions and the presidents of the autonomous communities.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) :

Holy Week, celebrated throughout Spain, but it is in Seville and Malaga where the celebration is most important, not forgetting the cities of Valladolid and Leon.

Semana Santa begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday, a week later, to commemorate the Resurrection of Christ.

San Fermín in Pamplona :

At the beginning of July, during one week, the San Fermín is celebrated in the streets of Pamplona in Navarra. Every morning at 8 o’clock in the morning, bulls are released in the city.

Tomatina de Buñol :

During your internship, another festival you will hear about is La Tomatina, another big Spanish festival that takes place in Buñol, in the Valencian Community, on the fourth Wednesday of August. The tomato war is on! Thousands of people gather in the streets of the town to throw tomatoes at each other.

The Semana Grande in the Basque Country:

Bilbao’s Semana Grande. The Semana Grande takes place in the 3rd week of August in the Basque Country and it is in Bilbao that it is most notable. It is a festival where a multitude of concerts of all genres are organised. Every night there is a fireworks competition. Some bullfights and giants.

Fiestas of Christians and Moors in Alicante:

The Fiestas de Cristianos y Moros are very popular in the region of Alicante, which you can see for yourself if you do your internship there. But also all over the south of Spain. It is a re-enactment of the Moorish takeover of Spain and then the Christian takeover.

Las Fallas in Valencia :

Las Fallas take place in Valencia, on the Costa Blanca where you can do your internship thanks to Animafest. It is a 5-day festival which ends on Saint Joseph’s day, 19th March. Cardboard giants are created and then the best ones are burnt during the “cremà”, the climax of the festival.

Seville Fair :

The Feria de Sevilla usually takes place 2 weeks after Semana Santa which runs from the 10th to the 16th of April. It is a sort of summary of the image we have of Andalusia: flamenco, bullfighting, Jerez (Xeres) and horses. Traditional music, parades, etc.

New Year’s Eve celebrations in Spain :

There are 3 equally important holidays for Spaniards: Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Three Kings’ Day. Spanish children are lucky because they receive more presents than other children. Indeed, although Father Christmas is becoming more and more popular, and internationalisation makes it necessary, traditionally it is the Three Wise Men who bring presents to children in the early hours of January 6th, which is a public holiday in Spain. Thanks to this holiday, you will make your internship more than magical.
