The dishes vary between the different locations in the country. However, most people agree that the paella is one of the best well known Spanish dishes. It originated in Valencia and can be prepared with different ingredients, but usually done with seafood. This is due the Mediterranean being able to provide a lot of seafood, however paella can be prepared with anything else.
There are several legends as to why the dish is called exactly paella, one being that the word patella, from Latin, meaning pan. Another is that once, a men prepared the dish for his wife, paella coming from “para ella”, meaning for her. The last one states that it comes from the Arabic word “Bagiyah”, meaning leftovers. This might be due to rice being imported from Arab countries. Which one you choose to believe is entirely up to you. Today, you can find paella with chicken, rabbit and snails, seasoned with saffron and beans, as well as paella with seafood.
Another traditional spanish dish is Tortilla Espanola, in Spain called tortilla de patata. This is the Spanish omelet, consisting of potatoes, eggs and onions. Gazpacho is also a popular dish in Spain, which is a cold tomato soup. It can be served in a bow or in a glass, as a refreshing drink. Jamon Serrano and Chorizo sausages are also popular meat products in Spain. The Jamon Serrano is the spanish version of ham. It has two different variations, Jamon serrano and jamon iberico.
