So if you are planning to do your internship in the Canary Islands and you are fond of hiking, in this article we are going to recommend excellent places for your hikes.
The Canary Islands, besides being a popular vacation destination for European tourists during the winter, is also a destination known for its varied hiking possibilities.
The volcanic nature of the archipelago, its mountainous terrain, as well as the multiple scenarios ranging from tropical rainforests to lunar-like landscapes.
Many of the hiking trails in the Canary Islands are located in national parks and UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites.
For inspiration, here are some of the best places to take your hikes. Our first recommendation is La Gomera, being the second smallest island, it is a subtropical paradise, where lush vegetation abounds and makes it a fascinating forest. One of the trails you can venture into is the Laurisilva forest in the center and to the Garajonay National Park.
The park organizes its own guided tours, which can be booked in advance. If you prefer to create your own itinerary, there are more than a dozen well-marked trails, accessible to all types of people that allow you to discover all the beauty that the Garajonay park has to offer. You can get more detailed information at the visitor center.
To the south of Tenerife is the Corona Forestal Natural Park, which surrounds the Teide National Park, is the largest protected natural area of the Canary Islands. A wonderful area of 50,000 hectares, abundant with pine forests and vegetation, ideal for walking, exploring and enjoying the local flora and fauna.
On the other hand, in the highlands of the island of Tenerife hides a Lunar Landscape, the result of erosion over hundreds of years.
The hike that starts in the village of Vilaflor takes you through ancient trails and what were once ancient trade routes of more than 500 years of existence and heritage of the roads of the Guanches.
Fuerteventura also has more than 255 kilometers of hiking trails. One of the most recommended is the gorge of Las Peñitas, within the Betancuria Rural Park, being one of the most photographed corners of Fuerteventura. Here you can follow the course of the river Palmas and see the famous Canary Island palm trees, the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, the palm grove of native Canary Island palm that has the oldest geological materials of the Canary Islands and the reservoir of Las Peñitas.
In Gran Canaria, one of the interesting and essential places to see is the Roque Nublo. Roque Nublo, the most representative icon of the islands, is a volcanic rock 80 meters high and 1,813 meters above sea level, which makes it one of the largest in the world.
From afar you can see the “window of Nublo”, a solemn stone arch that frames a view of the huge rock. To reach it there is a simple walking route from Los Llanos de la Pez; where you can also take the Camino de Santiago, the Camino de Cruz Grande and the Camino de la Plata, an old cattle grazing road.
This whole area known as the area of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The islands of La Palma and La Gomera, as they have many varied trails and much less urban or tourist development. However, there are great hikes all over the Canary Islands.
As you can see, if you like hiking, and you are doing your internship in the Canary Islands, you will find many amazingly contrasting trails to explore, from jungle forests to impressive sand dunes and rugged volcanic cliffs.
