Las Fallas de Valencia
One of the most famous festivals in Spain is Las Fallas, held in Valencia. It takes place from March 1st to 19th, culminating in the spectacular burning of intricate figures and structures, much to the amazement of both locals and tourists. Artists, sculptors, and craftsmen spend months designing and creating these incredible papier-mâché figures, some towering up to 30 meters high. These figures often satirize politicians, celebrities, or current events. At the end of the festival, the best creations are awarded, but all are eventually set ablaze in a grand finale.
The Seville Fair
Another unmissable event is the Seville Fair, which typically occurs from May 5th to 11th. While spring is celebrated all over Spain, nowhere does it with as much flair as Seville. The streets come alive with vibrant colors, illuminated by thousands of lightbulbs, especially during the “Lighting,” which marks the fair’s opening night. The week is filled with dancing, music, and cultural celebrations. One highlight is the Sevillanas dance, performed by locals who have been practicing it since childhood. The fair also features bullfights, horse-drawn carriages, and plenty of flamenco dresses, tapas, and joyful gatherings, all capped off by a grand fireworks display on Sunday night.
Semana Santa
Semana Santa, or Easter, is one of Spain’s most impressive religious festivals. It’s a profound mix of tradition, culture, music, and theater, with processions held across the country. While the dates change annually, you’ll find festivities everywhere, but the most striking processions are in Seville. Here, processions feature two floats, one representing the Virgin Mary and the other Christ, carried through the streets by men known as “costaleros.” You’ll also see penitents, known as “Nazarenos,” who often walk barefoot for hours, dressed in outfits that may remind some of the Ku Klux Klan—but it’s purely coincidental.
