Granada was a bastion of Muslim forces. Shortly after the Christian troops had the city rebuilt, the main mosque was converted into the Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada.  A magnificent Renaissance-Baroque building that impresses with its size. Inside, the eyes will be delighted first of all by the main chapel called Capilla Real.

Inside there are sarcophagi with the remains of the most important rulers. The interior of the temple delights with its craftsmanship of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art. Inside the temple there is also a museum with works of outstanding Flemish and Italian painters. The beauty of this temple should delight everyone, especially artistic souls.

Generalife

Used to be a building of the greatest Muslim rulers, who inhabited the area in the old days, where they could relax and enjoy the pleasure of staying with nature, because inside there are wonderful, huge gardens formed into a kind of labyrinth, full of bushes, flowers and fountains. The noise of water, the singing of birds, the rustling of leaves moving in the wind these sounds soothe the nerves.

Today, these gardens have become one of the main attractions where every year a lot of tourists visit the alleys of these beautiful gardens for a walk both day and night. It is recommended to book tickets online as long queues can form especially during the holiday and holiday season. Out of season, however, there is no shortage of tourists either.

Albaicín and Barrio del Sacromonte

Those who like to explore the historic parts of the city are recommended to visit the unique districts of Granada, which used to be bustling with the life of other cultures living in these areas. One such example is the Arabic district of Albaicín. This was the most inhabited area by the Arab population. Before the Christian rebirth of the city, this area alone was inhabited by 50,000 people.

This shows the enormity that awaits a visit. The narrow streets, which are overgrown with jasmine, are enchanting in spring with their charm and scent. It is worth to go there without a guide and discover the charm of these countless streets by yourself. Each one hides its unique beauty. You will come across numerous stalls and shops where you can buy original souvenirs. On the squares, you can sit down and relax with a delicious coffee, snack or a water pipe.

Another example of a district worth visiting is Barrio del Sacromonte. It is connected with the culture of Andalusian gypsies. This culture was characterized by flamenco singing and dancing, which left a mark in the form of architecture dedicated to this art. Visiting this area you can see the Abbey of Abadía del Sacromonte, where the relics, books and other things showing the religious values of the first Christians are kept. Along the Darro River, where the Sacramonte district is built, you can find Arabic baths, which date back to the 11th century and are still preserved in good condition.

Finally, the biggest attraction of Granada that will be presented in this blog is the Alhambra. The great and most beautiful Muslim palace complex ever built in the world. Together with the adjacent Generalife Gardens and the Alabaicin district, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This building has its beginning since the Muslims settled in this area and their first ruler decided to create it around the 9th century. Later, during the reign of successive monarchs, it was constantly expanded and improved to the magnificence that we can admire today.

The Alhambra is surrounded by walls over 2 km long and served as a protective palace. The whole fortification had a nice many districts, it was like a city in a city where science, religion, poetry flourished. Today we can visit the royal chambers, auditoriums, fountains and others. The Alhambra was spared by the newly reigning monarchs after being reflected by Christians. Only as a sign of the domination of the new kingdom a mosque was demolished and a church was erected in its place and a monastery and a royal palace were added.
